is one that has a wide range of potential tasks, which embody a great deal of diversity; much greater than many other occupations or vocations. However, when looking at the
role of the presbyter and the underlying concepts, values and ideals that guide the office, it may be seen as creating a degree of coherence. This is especially true in
the way that the entire array of tasks can be seen as inherently tasks that are unavoidably linked to the specific calling the presbyter. Essentially, many of thee tasks may
be fulfilled by individuals who are not presbyters practising ministry, but it is the overall concept of the presbyter, including the calling which create the coherence of the Presbyterian office.
The presbyter is the role of a minister; however this is a very general description that embodies a great deal of ambiguity. However, one may appreciate the coherence of the
role by looking at the way in which the role of the presbyter has evolved as well as the way in which the different tasks fit together. In the
early days of Christianity, before it became an established movement Christians were effectually dues, with their rabbi having the role of the minister or presbyter (Sobosan, 1974, p129). The difference
was merely a term or phraseology rather than the manifestation of a different concept. In his works Irenaeus believed that the presbyter as part of a succession from the Apostles,
in this context the Apostles along with the Episcopate whether recipients of a gift of truth (Bauckham, 2007, p674; Sobosan, 1974, p129). Therefore, in this context the presbyter not only
has a gift, they are also in a role that Irenaeus sees is important because it is based on the concept of apostolic succession (Sobosan, 1974, p129). In the context
