Though the most common opinion is that there is nothing 'wrong' with living together either instead of, or before marriage, there is increasing evidence that there is indeed something 'wrong' with it, to the extent that it is listed as a risk factor against the success of subsequent marriage between the same partners. (though not enforced); in others, it is not recognized as any kind of interim condition. Heterosexual couples living together are either married or they are not. An example
is that of North Carolina, where opposite-sex roommates can share a residence without being declared married in the eyes of the state, but a couple sharing a residence in the
more common connotation is declared legally married by common law after 72 hours of such an arrangement. That law is another that routinely goes unenforced, but remains on the
