Essay / Research Paper Abstract

16 pages in length. Trauma of any kind throws people into various states of mental distress as the mind attempts to process - and thereby protect itself against - the imagery displayed during the disturbing incident. When the event is too much for the individual to manage, the individual's emotional and physical wellbeing suffers in light of the tremendous stress associated with the anxiety inherent to witnessing the trauma. When these incidents occur over and over again as in the case of military conflict, the prevalence and intensity of psychological problems intensify to the point where the most simple aspects of life are looked upon as wholly overwhelming. This response, known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), has a long history of infiltrating the minds and bodies of returning war veterans; those who fought in the Iraqi war were no less impacted by this emotionally paralyzing disorder. "While fatalities and casualties [of the Iraqi war] were relatively light compared to other conflicts historically, individual incidents can, nevertheless, have a lasting impact on individuals who witness them or are involved" (Musruck et al, 2003, pp. 4-9). Research indicates how cognitive behavioral therapy is a particularly useful approach in helping Iraqi war veterans deal with - and ultimately put aside - the intrusive presence of PTSD.
