agitation or disturbance caused by strong feelings" (Encarta(r) World English Dictionary, 1999). The simplest of emotions, however, become very difficult to define and to study (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Three aspects
of emotions have been categorized: Emotion is a feeling that is private and subjective (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Humans can experience a range of emotional states at the same time,
one emotion can overlap with another and many times, there are no observable behaviors to suggest what emotions a person is feeling (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Emotion is a state
of psychological arousal, an expression or display of distinctive somatic and autonomic responses (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). In this category, emotions are automatic responses to something. These kinds of emotions may
involve specific biological organs, such as the heart (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Emotions are actions commonly "deemed", such as defending or attacking in response to a threat (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). This
category relates directly to Darwins theories regarding the "functional roles of emotion" (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Darwin believed that emotions were critical to survival because they lead a person to act
when there is a threat (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Along the line, researchers have added to these three categories, often trying to develop sub-categories (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Wundt proposed, for example,
three dimensions of emotions which were presented in pairs of opposites: "pleasantness/unpleasantness, tension/release and excitement/relaxation" (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). Plutchik, by contrast, thinks "there are eight basic emotions grouped in four
pairs of opposites: joy/sadness, acceptance/disgust, anger/fear, surprise/anticipation" (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). In Plutchiks view, these are the basic emotions that are the foundation for all other emotions (ThinkQuest Team, 2008). The
research conducted in different fields over the last twenty years has led scientists to believe the connection and relationship between emotions and cognition are far more complex than originally thought
