has led to attempts within Psychoanalytic therapy to explain how people change by studying the mechanisms used to stay the same (Cooper, 1998). These are the processes of resistance
and defense mechanisms within the context of psychotherapy - to allow the individual to contemplate change in the safety of their sameness. Life is a matter of interpretation,
just as reality is a combination of perception and definition. The individual does not have to abide by the shared meaning packages of society in order to know meaning
in their lives. Each person has a different perspective, a slightly different definition of themselves and their world. The shared meaning of social definitions is merely a foundation
for the expansion of thought. Human freedom is defined by the choosing of alternatives. "The human capacity for awareness and the ability to symbolize gives us enormous power,
but this awareness is a double-edged phenomenon : undistorted awareness can lead to full functioning and a rich life, while distortions in awareness lead to maladjustment and a multitude of
destructive behaviors" (Pescitelli, 2001, Internet source). Human experience provides the a posteriori knowledge of the fact but it is the human intellect that allows exploration into the a priori.
The primary goal of intervention is to form goal strategy that is consistent with the reality of the client and will also suffice for the agency. Halley et
al (1998) states, "measures of the target behavior based on direct observation are usually the best measures of change" (p. 461). The essence of change is to strengthen the
