the focus of research, especially in assessments of the views of ballet and modern dancers. In relating these studies, it is beneficial to consider the factors that influence
the various research developments, including limitations to existing studies, factors that create variances in outcomes, and the application of the data collected for future research. Clabaugh and Morling (2004) provide
an assessment of the perceptions of personality traits of dancers as recorded by pre-professional ballet and modern dancers, in order to assess group stereotypes. These outcomes were compared
with dancer self-reports. The elements that were tested included factors like "fear of negative evaluation," "personal need for structure," "fitness esteem," and "body esteem." This study was conducted
based on the researchers beliefs that stereotyping, even within a social group, can result in exaggerated or bias views (Clabaugh and Morling, 2004). These researchers found that pre-professional
dancers accurately stereotyped ballet dancers (in comparison with modern dancers) as scoring higher on "fear of negative evaluation," "personal need for structure," "fitness esteem," while incorrectly stereotyping ballet dancers as
having lower "body esteem" than modern dancers (Clabaugh and Morling, 2004). The researchers found that "body esteem" ratings were essentially the same in ballet dancer and modern dancer subject
groups. Because of the impact of group beliefs and the intensity of the physical training relative to a career choice in dancing, the accuracy of stereotyping in the dance
culture can influence perceptions of new dancers (Clabaugh and Morling, 2004). One of the limitations of this study relates to the assessment of dance personalities and the impacts on
the study outcomes. The researchers noted that there is a relatively limited body of literature regarding the psychological view of modern dancers. Instead, a larger body of research considers
