of ethics is not new. Ethics are the principles by which individuals groups or organisations should behave, they lay down a system or theory for behaviour and moral values. Therefore,
a case of ethics will set out expectations and guidelines to ensure moral or correct conduct. When considered in this way one
of the oldest codes of ethics may be seen n the Old Testament, with the tend commandments. Simple and easy to understand rules for behaviour that were documented. AS time
has gone by new codes of ethics have been developed. Today they are used by a great number of organisations, with their content and scope varying dependant on the aim
and culture of the organisation or group of people it seeks to guide. The role of the code of ethics is to
guide those whom it covers, indicating what is and is not acceptable. IN many instances it is a formality, as those covered would perform in this manner, but in formalising
it the minority of cases where the conduct may not be correct is guided and borderline or obscure situations may apply to code for further guidance.
The medical professions are well known for their codes of conduct, these cover the total behaviour of the professions. For example a doctor may not undertake
activities in his private life that my place his professional ability or the profession itself into question. The most obvious may be having an affair with a patient. However, the
code of ethics is much wider than this. Private life is seen as private, but may e covered where inappropriate conduct is seen.
