concerns are certainly addressed in a general way, but the truth is that each specific department will provide instruction to officers and officer candidates. To an extent, law enforcement is
self-regulating--who is going to tell a judge what to do?--but there are conventions, state regulations and certain common sense notions that go to addressing matters of conduct. Essentially, all law
enforcement personnel subscribe to some important guideline. However, there is little in the way of continuity between types of service. For psychologists for instance, there are strict guidelines that those
professionals must follow, but in law enforcement there is no one agency telling workers what is right and wrong and what they can and cannot do. In respect to police
and corrections professionals in addition to judges and attorneys, there is a different degree of expectation and jurisdiction . Each of the professions does not have a specific written
code of conduct but each also do have specific rules in particular jurisdictions. For law enforcement officers, a particular organizations "formal code of conduct" will generally be comprised
of a guideline of official policies and procedures, as well as applicable statutes and regulations ("FBI Publications") . Most officers will receive general ethics training from their precincts and
one may think of this as a precursor to embracing more formal codes of conduct ("FBI Publications"). The formal code at the FBI for example includes specific courses in ethics
