In this production, the main question "involves a choice unavailable to most minorities -- whether they would opt out of that status if possible."1 Dan Miller (Jeff Daniels) and his wife Laura (Marlee Matlin) play the parents of a boy, Adam, who was born hearing but has gradually gotten deaf.2 Dan can hear normally but Laura is profoundly deaf; however, Dan is so in love with her that he said he "yearned to speak her language."3 This changes after a visit to the doctor, who suggests cochlear implants for the boy to restore his hearing to some degree.4 Dan also encourages the boy to talk, which dismays Laura and irritates Max, her father, who is also deaf.5 He is a fierce advocate of "deaf pride" and is angered by the idea that there is something wrong with Adam that must be "fixed."6 The story is told during the court case in which the estranged couple battles for custody of Adam, but the central question is whether or not members of the majority, in this case those who hear normally, are right in thinking that everyone wants to be the same; and if they have the right to force conformity on those who are different. Cochlear implants in the film are the device that the director uses to pose this most important question.
