life at another location is no better than the problems they left. And while there are a great deal of people who experience varying degrees of turmoil on the job,
people who help others--nurses, doctors, coaches, teachers and social workers--often experience a different kind of stress. While they do also experience the difficulties on the job in terms of politics,
career goals they never meet, salary shifts and the like, these workers also experience something commonly known as burnout. And they experience the syndrome at a much higher rate than
the general populous. Burnout is a difficult problem to handle as the syndrome permeates the inner self. Although work related, emotions are exaggerated and life becomes difficult for these
victims on the job and at home. What is burnout exactly? Burnout is equated with a combination of emotional exhaustion and cynicism that occurs often among those who do "people
work" of some sort (Toscano and Ponterdolph 32L). As their emotional resources become depleted, these laborers feel that they can no longer give of themselves on a psychological level (32L).
It is easy to understand how this can happen. Everyone has a stress threshold. Sometimes it seems that life gets too complex and one can only give so much.
Another symptom of burnout is the development of negative, cynical attitudes about clients and finally, a third aspect of the syndrome is a tendency to evaluate oneself negatively, especially in
regard to ones work with clients (Toscano and Ponterdolph 32L). Although this definition provides examples of how workers relate to clients, one can substitute the terminology and instead refer to
