in the films production. The following film review focuses on the leadership style that Carter used, which not only brought his young players together into a winning basketball team, but
also inspired them to apply themselves to their academic studies, which mean that many of them went onto college. Carter was initially hesitant to take on the part-time job
of coaching his high school alma maters basketball team since the Richmond High Oilers inevitably lose games while on the court and fight when they are off it (Koehler, 2005).
However, he takes the job anyway. From his first encounter with this team, Carter establishes a climate of respect, respect toward himself and he demands that they likewise respect each
other. Rather than gym clothes, Carter enters the gym dressed in a suit. He is there as a paid professional, so he dresses for the role. From the beginning,
Carter makes his expectations perfectly clear to this team. When he enters the gym, meeting them for the first time, wearing a suit, Timo Cruz immediately assumes that Carter
is a teacher. He says, "Are you some preacher man? Cause God wont do you no good in this neighborhood." Carter says, "Leave the gym." Cruz continues to threaten
Carter and takes a swing at him, which Carter blocks and then, with an arm pended behind his back, Carter pushes Cruz against a wall. Cruz says that teachers are
not suppose to touch students and Carter responds, "Im not a teacher. Im the new basketball coach." It is a powerful introduction. Cruz walks out of the gym after this
confrontation. Carter establishes the rest of his ground rules. Any sort of mouthing off and disrespect is punished with calisthenics. He is
