homicide are considered to be somewhat different from those of their male counterparts. While men typically choose to kill in a very straightforward manner, using a frontal assault weapon, such
as a sword or an ax in ancient times, and then guns, in contemporary society, women murderers have long been associated with poison (Mann 1). This has been regarded as
a particularly insidious way to take a life as there is "no way to see it coming or to defend against it" (Mann 1).
In ancient Greek literature, both Aeschylus and Euripides crafted female murderers, Clytemnestra and Medea, respectively, who both took lives, but in very different ways. The following examination of
these narratives argues that Clytemnestra committed murder in a very masculine way, while Medeas form of homicide was very feminine. Medea The ancient Greek audience for whom Euripides wrote
Medea were well aware of her story as it derives from classical Greek mythology. Nevertheless, Medeas nurse recounts the sage of their meeting, i.e., the story of Jason and the
quest for the Golden Fleece, in the opening scene of the play. The nurse relates how Medea turned against all that she had known, including her own family, in order
