is acceptable in all situations as cars currently are designed. Other components of cars have been greatly altered in the past, retaining appearance and function similar to the original,
but delivering either enhanced performance, reduced overall weight or some other desired result. The purpose here is to examine the structure and function of the clutch and to make
suggestions for alternative materials that could be acceptable in providing greater performance. Clutch Function The clutch is located between the engine and transmission
and enables momentary interruption of power to the wheels so that the driver can change gears. The engine turns continually, and as every young driver learning to drive a
car with a manual transmission has discovered, stopping the car without interrupting operation of the engine requires that the wheels need to be disengaged from it until their forward motion
is required again. The clutch allows the smooth engagement of a "spinning engine to a non-spinning transmission by controlling the slippage between them" (Nice).
The flywheel is an engine part that spins in response to the energy released by fuel combustion. If the motor is running, the flywheel is spinning.
The clutch plate is connected to the transmission and is that part that when spinning in concert with the flywheel ensures that the transmission preserves engagement of the chosen gear.
