"Clueless", the film produced by Paramount Productions and starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher, Stacey Dash as Dionne, Brittany Murphy as Tai, and Justin Walker as Christian, is a
cinematic depiction of Jane Austens 1815 novel "Emma" (Mathews, 1995). Although the film chooses to stage its plot in a distinctly different era and setting than Austens original novel
(in Beverly Hills in fact and centering around the troubles facing modern teens), the story which is presented is classic comedy.
The "heroine" in "Clueless" is on a quest of self-discovery. She is the classic "good kid", devoted to her father and friends and respectful of her world and her
body yet even she becomes too caught up in the material aspects of life. Consequently the intent of "Clueless" is the teaching of a great lesson, the lesson that
those that appear to be our friends are many times anything but. In "Clueless" Cher learns that the friend who she has previously considered "clueless" is really more intune
to the important things of life than she is. She also soon discovers that another friend is really just a shallow impostor of a friend. The heroines role,
of course, is defined not only by her own inner convictions but also by those with whom she interacts. The interactions which occur between the four primary characters
of "Clueless" present an interesting opportunity for the analysis of the so-called "comic spirit" broached in ancient philosophy. The "comic spirit" of "Clueless"
