A 7 page overview of the drug Clozapine and older anxiolytic drugs used to treat conditions such as schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. The author emphasizes that there are definite advantages to drugs such as Clozapine when compared to older anxiolytic drugs. There are concerns as well, however. To be most effective and safe, Clozapine must be prescribed only in carefully defined conditions and circumstances. The drug Clozapine (most commonly known under the brand name of Clozaril) has proven itself to be a remarkable treatment for those suffering from conditions as diverse as Parkinsons disease
and schizophrenia (Geriatrics, 1999). Its use in treating schizophrenics is particularly interesting given that an estimated three million Americans suffered from this devastating condition prior to the introduction
of Clozapine yet less than half of those individuals responded to the predominant drug treatments of the time such as anxiolytic drugs such as Thorazine (chlorpromazine) (Wallis and Willwerth, 1992).
Indeed, Clozapine has proven itself superior to such drugs as Thorazine in a number of respects. There are, however, several concerns with Clozapine as well. Indeed, there
are other drugs which, according to the precise condition being treated, may be just as effective. The primary problem facing the practitioner, therefore, is precisely defining the condition being
treated and providing the appropriate supervision to ensure that the proper psychotherapeutic drug is being prescribed. Prior to the introduction of Clozapine, even
those patients who did respond to treatment with anxiolytic drugs such as Thorazine suffered from a number of side effects (Wallis and Willwerth, 1992). Anxiety and depression are common
(Wallis and Willwerth, 1992). Approximately eighty percent of individuals treated with Thorazine suffer from side effects as serious as muted emotions, impacted motor skills, and compulsive behaviors such as
foot tapping (Wallis and Willwerth, 1992). The same percentage of Thorazine patients risk irreversible facial and tongue twitching, a condition known as tardive dyskinesia (Wallis and Willwerth, 1992).
