Twelfth Night - Analysis of Fools 141.htm). For the most part these figures serve to be voices of truth and voices of comedy. They provide relief from plays that may
be otherwise overly serious, and they offer the reader or viewer with an honest description of the events which are taking place. In many ways these individuals are incredibly
important to the plays, for without them we would not have relief, nor would we often see the truth of the unfolding story. Two of Shakespeares plays which incorporate clowns
as important characters are "Twelfth Night" and "Alls Well That Ends Well." In the following paper we examine the clowns in each story and then conclude the paper with a
brief comparison of the two. Twelfth Night The name of the clown in Shakespeares "Twelfth Night" is Feste. According to one author, his "role in this Illyrian comedy
is significant because Illyria is a country permeated with the spirit of the Feast of Fools, where identities are confused, uncivil rule applauded...and no harm is done" (Anonymous Twelfth Night
- Analysis of Fools 141.htm). As such he is not only a fool or clown, but a necessary part of the society, and recognized as such. In this particular
play the clown is employed by Olivias father and takes the role of licensed fool in the household. He is admired and the people are entertained by his antics.
