identity. Clothing and Identity: Cowboys and Cowgirls When one thinks about cowboys and cowgirls in society today one envisions certain styles that are very unmistakable. They normally wear
button up or snap up collared shirts that more often than not have some simple print on them. They are made of cotton. They wear blue jeans that are generally
tighter than most people wear them, or perhaps even incredibly tight. They wear belts with belt buckles, sometimes huge belt buckles. They will wear cowboy hats and they will obviously
be wearing cowboy boots. Cowboy boots are pointed and have no fastening devices. There are more modern female boots called ropers, but they are lace up and more for looks
than they are for practicality or true cowboy/cowboy girl style. The origins of this look, which is very unisex, comes from many things, primarily working on a range with
cattle and riding horses. The hat is to keep rain and sun off the individual. Baggy pants are not necessarily conducive to ease of getting on or off a horse.
Boots are made to easily slip on or off in case a horse goes wild and the riders foot is stuck in the stirrup. Boots that come off easily (and
pointed toes allow ease of entering in a stirrup) can save a persons life. In terms of belt buckles this has likely come to symbolize rodeos for the prize in
