a definition of what cloning is, particularly with regard to the use of human cells for research and medical applications. The issue of cloning,
especially in reference to the use to which cloned cells and embryos might be put, has been both strenuously supported and equally strenuously argued against within the scientific and political
communities in recent years, partly because of the ethical questions involved and partly because in some areas, cloning research is regarded as incomplete. For instance, the student could point
out here that even though the use of stem cells has been the subject of considerable debate within the realm of bioethics, it is evident that there are a number
of diverse ways in which stem cells can be used, and that these have applications both in pure research and with regard to drug testing and the treatment of disease
by way of cell therapy. There have been studies conducted which use both foetal and adult stem cells, and it is with regard to
the former that the greatest volume of ethical discussion has been generated. However, for the purposes of treating disease it has been noted that the use of adult stem cells
is preferable, especially since the problems of transplant rejection can be avoided if the cells used for culture are replaced in the original donor.
It is interesting to note that many of the recent studies have focused particularly on adult stem cells: earlier research concentrated more strongly on the potential of foetal
stem cells, since it was thought at the time that adult cells did not have the same potential for diversification. Increased emphasis on the use of adult cells has been
