cloning could exist, few would believe those kind of fantastical perspectives would ever come to fruition. In the modern world, though, medical research has not only expanded into the
area of cloning, but has also looked at the use of cells derived from human fetuses and umbilical chords to address a number of different health concerns. Contrary to
the belief of scientists 50 years ago, the fantastical has come into being, and the sociological, economic, legal and political implications are enormous.
In terms of the ethics of this kind of research and its value, an application of utilitarianism is often used as a means of arguing in favor of
stem cell research and cloning experimentation. This is based on the ethical views outlined by theorists like Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Mill argued that "while
the rightness or wrongness of an action does not depend upon the agents motive, it does depend entirely upon the intention" (Ridge, 2002, p. 54). For a Utilitarian, the "rightness
or wrongness of an action [is] a direct function of its consequences. Either intentions or motives may have some influence on the consequences of an action, but there is no
obvious reason to suppose that intentions, but not motives, are especially strongly connected to the consequences of actions" (Ridge, 2002, p. 54). In
the case of stem cell research and cloning, two areas of research that supporters have argued will show a way to improvements in healthcare for major diseases, the motive for
