that has been a part of mankind since the human race first began to have time free from simple pursuits concerning survival, when the human race could sit down for
a moment and think about life and mere existence. It is the inherent nature of the human race to examine, question, test, and explore life and all that it means.
And, with that truth we often look to artists to help us define our social world, our spiritual world, or our own inner world. As one can well imagine,
those worlds may well possess qualities that we are not pleased with. In this respect we find that some artists portray those realities that we would perhaps rather see ignored.
When this happens the world deems particular art as offensive, for it shocks us and offers us images that we are disturbed by. Sometimes these images stick with us forever,
perhaps continually haunting an individual. Bearing these perspectives in mind the following paper first examines the Stanley Kubrick film "Clockwork Orange," discussing its meaning, themes, and musical elements. The paper
then examines two artists who have been known to shock viewers. Those artists are the photographic artist Andres Serrano and the performance artist Gina Pane. Clockwork Orange The
most fundamental theme or issue in this particular film involves the title. This title refers to an individual who is nothing more than a mechanical being who is perhaps following
civilization in the path designated by those in power. It also provides an image of orange, which is actually a symbolic representation of an orangutan, or an ape like creature
