Psychologically, however, Stanley struggles to rectify his feelings in the face of his biologic sex. He is also the product of societal oppression, oppression that permeates every aspect
of our society from the informal to the formal. Needless to say, transsexuals are typically exposed to societal shunning in regard to
their choosing to either act out the role of the opposite sex without seeking surgery as well as when they actually pursue surgery to externally convert them into the opposite
sex. Numerous laws are on the books around the world which pertain to transsexualism (Heyes, 2006). Many were written before the issue of transsexualism ever came to the
forefront of societal concern. Among these are the anti-cross-dressing laws in New York (Levine, 1994). These laws were composed long before the issue of transsexualism arose in New
York and were in actuality written in an attempt by the New York state legislature to combat civil disobedience from militant farmers who were obscuring their identities by dressing as
American Indians (Levine, 1994). Times have most certainly changed since the days of the New York cross-dressing laws.
Today transsexualism is a very real topic in the United States and indeed around the world. The first widely-publicized transsexual was an ex-GI originally named George Jorgensen who was
