Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. The marked difference between the ability to predict climate changes fifty years from now and doing the same in a five-day forecast is found in the way the environment has steadily degraded over the years. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

the years. A most obvious indicator is the melting icecaps and how polar bears are becoming stranded on patches of ice that have broken free from their stable foundation;
to analyze this single example is to understand the potential catastrophe the coming fifty years will bring to the planet as a whole. Coral reefs reflect yet another example
of how climate changes can be more accurately predicted than what the weather will be five days from now. Their "job" as protectors of the sea is being severely
threatened as they decline in mass with every passing year. Indeed, charting the occurrence of environmental change is the key to forecasting long-term climate change; while immediate weather patterns
typically indicate daily conditions, they are no longer a guarantee of what will occur five days in the future due to the volatile nature of todays climate fluctuations. The
loss of 80% of Caribbean coral reef cover in the past three decades exceeds the rate of tropical forest loss. Researchers now predict that, with global climate change, coral
reef ecosystems will see greater changes in the next 50 years than they have faced in the last half million years (World Future Society, 2004, p. S5). Emission scenarios
are a necessary component of future climate predictions because they establish a basis upon which future outcome may or may not occur. Scientists develop such scenarios so they can
speculate how the environment will react to potential situations as the years unfold and mankind continues moving forward in the detrimental way it has been. The preparation aspect of
emission scenarios allows for the engagement of critical thinking and informed decision making as a means by which to intercept and restructure undesirable human progress where climate is concerned.
