there are millions of people worldwide who are being displaced every year due to the impact of climate change and its tendency to cause an increase in the rate of
natural disasters. This fact was strikingly evident in 2004, which is when roughly five million people were displaced and around a quarter of a million in eleven different Asian and
African countries were killed due to the impact of natural disasters (Cohen and Bradley, 2010). While some have disputed the link between climate change and refugee displacement, international institutions have
concluded from research data that climate change contributes significantly to "major forced displacements" of populations (Kolmannskog and Trebbi, 2010, p. 715). During the last two decades, the number of natural
disasters has doubled, going from roughly 200 to over 400 per year and experts attribute nine out of ten of these events to climate-related causes (Cohen and Bradley, 2010). This
increase makes examination of the protection for climate change refugee imperative. The 1998 UN Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement (GPID) acknowledge that assistance should be provided for people experiencing
disaster-induced displacement; however, this protection differs for those people who cross international borders, as legal standards applied to refugees do not apply to individuals who are driven from their homes
due to natural disasters (Kolmannskog and Trebbi, 2010). This is because these legal standards link refugee status to fear of persecution. Nevertheless, the 1998 UN GPID may be applied in
