There are international efforts to control these emissions such as the Kyoto Protocol, which requires nations to reduce their emissions to 1990 levels but the U.S. who produces the most greenhouse gases was the only industrialized nation that did not sign it (Kolbert, DATE, p. 151). Fossil fuel, oil, the one of the major causes of CO2 emissions also referred to as greenhouse gases. Fossil fuels include coal, petroleum and gas (Archer, DATE, p. 99). Oil is the most convenient of the three because it is a liquid and can be stored and transported easily (Archer, DATE, p. 102). Most of the known oil is in the Middle East but there could be many more deposits that are unknown (Archer, DATE, p. 102). One report said there is about 1,150,000 million barrels of oil that can be harvested but there is likely more fields that will be discovered (Archer, DATE, p. 102). Regardless of how many more oil fields might be discovered, it is a finite resource. In other words, there is only so much oil and no more. When it will run out is a completely unknown factor. A report by BP suggested that oil would run out in 40 years, but years later, it continues to be 40 years (Archer, DATE, p. 103).
