challenging schedule balancing work and personal commitments. The plan for the initial counseling session was to begin with some evaluative questions, in order to ensure that Holly was safe
(not in a domestic violence situation) and to define her basic needs and issues. Holly is a 23-year-old woman in a partnered relationship with "John." Holly is
currently 5.5 months pregnant and is also caring for Johns 7-year-old daughter, "Lilly," and her own 16 year old sister, "Beth." Holly expressed concerns over her family stability, her
commitments, and the limitations of her partner. Initially, Holly stated being under-appreciated, angry and disappointed both with her partner and her choices. It also become apparent that Holly
is experiencing stress related to her commitments, the belief that she has settled for the wrong partner, and the fact that she has limited resources to meet the needs of
her growing family. Holly identified her desire to work in a family therapy situation to improve her current situation. Madsen (1999) recognized that some of the foundational aspects of
relationships can be lost and that the therapeutic process can be used to help regain some of these elements. For example, Holly reported a feeling of loss of connection
with her partner, loss of competence in relation to the family process, loss of vision about the direction for the family, especially in regards to the birth of a new
child, a loss of hope in regards to the future of her family, and the loss of vision about how to approach the challenges she faces. The overall plan
