The following paper offers a reflection on issues brought up in the book Clever as Serpents. Clever as Serpents by Grote and McGeeney
1. Are humans beings headed for progress and a better life or for poorer living conditions and a decline of civilization? According to the work by Grote and
McGeeney there are many areas in which the world at large is excelling, but other areas that are clearly weakening. For example, "Economic progress remains hobbled by cultural deterioration. While
market economies have radically altered everyday life and improved standards of living at an unprecedented pace, violence and social anarchy are also on the rise"(Grote; McGeeney, 1997; 13). In the
opinion of this particular reader such truths are quite evident throughout the world as it applies to other issues as well. For example, while the United States seems to possess
a great deal of medical knowledge and capability other parts of the world stand on the brink of destruction such as Africa and the AIDS problems. And, while the United
States possesses this knowledge and technology for health concerns, Americans are constantly showing signs of incredibly bad health. Perhaps human beings are
not prepared for the technological world that they have fast forwarded into. Perhaps human beings are not prepared to deal with the growing populations in the world and the complexity
of international business and cultural interaction. There are clearly many strengths and many weaknesses in the human race and for this particular reader/writer it seems that the race is headed
