decisions and actions. Discussion Part of the problem in discussing the life of Cleopatra or any figure from the ancient world is the sheer span of time separating us from
past events. We have no real way of knowing which sources are accurate, and how much of their information is to be trusted. However, we do know some facts about
the legendary queen. She was not Egyptian but Macedonian, the "second daughter of King Ptolemy XII," and the last of the Macedonian dynasty that "ruled Egypt between the death of
Alexander the Great in 323 and its annexation by Rome in 31" (Hamilton, 1986). There appears to be no doubt that she was strikingly attractive: "Coin portraits of her show
a countenance alive rather than beautiful, with a sensitive mouth, firm chin, liquid eyes, broad forehead, and prominent nose" (Hamilton, 1986). The Greek writer Plutarch describes her voice as being
like "an instrument of many strings" (Hamilton, 1986). Plutarch also wrote that "Plato admits four sorts of flattery, but she had a thousand" (Hamilton, 1986). We can thus assume that
she knew she had power over men, and how to use it. As was not uncommon in ancient Egypt, Cleopatra was married to her brother Ptolemy XIII (Hamilton, 1986). (The
idea appears to have been to keep the royal bloodlines pure, but instead the inbreeding weakened them.) At any rate, their father Ptolemy XII died in 51 and left the
throne to Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII, who was 15 at the time (Hamilton, 1986). They soon began to quarrel and civil war broke out; "Ptolemy XII had been
