cleft palate is a congenital anomaly of the mouth structure. In the U.S. it affects one of every one thousand newborns (Salinas, 2001). In most cases the condition
can be related to a variety of non-genetic factors such as folic acid deficiency during pregnancy (Salinas, 2001). In other cases, however, the condition is a genetic one and
one that can be passed on to affected individuals offspring (Salinas, 2001). It can be related to over four hundred genetic disorders (Salinas, 2001).
Cleft lip and palate occurs as a result of improper fusing of the two sides of the face during embryonic development (Colgate Worldwide, 2005). Cleft
palate is distinguished from cleft lip in that it involves a direct opening between the palate, that separation that normally exists between the roof of the mouth and the bottom
of the basal nose structure (Colgate Worldwide, 2005). This hole can vary in size from just a small crack to a large diameter opening (Colgate Worldwide, 2005). Both
conditions can be serious but cleft palate is by far the most serious (Colgate Worldwide, 2005). Cleft lips are immediately apparent at birth (Colgate Worldwide, 2005). Cleft palates,
on the other hand, may or may not be immediately apparent (Colgate Worldwide, 2005). According to the severity, they may take some time for the parent to discern (Colgate
Worldwide, 2005). One of the most visual complications in the seepage of liquids or food from the nose as the baby attempts to feed (Colgate Worldwide, 2005).
Both a cleft lip and a cleft palate can cause speech problems as well as difficulty in eating and breathing (Colgate Worldwide, 2005).
