Consider the case of Californias Sierra Nevada mountains, which are home to the largest, and oldest, trees on Earth - the sequoia redwoods
(Hertzgaard, 2000). The oldest specimen is believed to be 3,300 years old, and life-spans of 2,000 years are common (Hertzgaard, 2000). However, the giant sequoias are being threatened
by clear cutting along the borders of the Big Trees State Park (Hertzgaard, 2000). Clear-cutting is the practice of felling every
single tree on a given plot of land (Hertzgaard, 2000). Then, the land is scraped bare and it is sprayed with various herbicides and it is then replanted as
a tree plantation (Hertzgaard, 2000). It is the belief of the timber industry that such a practice yields healthier and more productive forests (Hertzgaard, 2000). However, according to
environmentalists, there are significant costs associated with the increased efficiency and production that the new arrangement provides (Hertzgaard, 2000). More specifically, environmentalists are concerned with the dramatic effects that
befall the wildlife and habitats that are native to the lands in question (Hertzgaard, 2000). Furthermore, water supplies are also disrupted typically which has important ramifications for both wildlife
and humans (Hertzgaard, 2000). A study conducted on the impact of clear-cutting in Maine reveals many significant environmental risks (Appell, 2000).
