few of the children did not. The children who did not have their costumes expressed a wish to wear their costumes when they saw the children wearing theirs.
The teachers recognized that this was not an average day, and that some discrepancies in the schedule would occur because of holiday activities, costumes, and a special morning breakfast. As
the children came in, teachers asked them what their costumes were or whether they planned on wearing a costume that night. One student, "Jack," was asked what his costume
was, and he answered that he was dressed as the Incredible Hulk. Jack was dressed in all green, including green hair, face, and hands, and Jack proudly told the
other children what his costume was. Jack not only dressed as the Hulk, but also imitated some of his behaviors, including flexing his muscles and making the voice of
the Hulk. Other children responded to Jacks actions and related an understanding of his costume and his acting. Some mothers and grandmothers provided a special breakfast for the children,
including cookies, cupcakes, carrots and chips. Some of these parents also stayed and helped to serve the breakfast snack and helped in the class after breakfast. The children
whose mothers were helping in the classroom demonstrated some characteristic behaviors that I had not viewed before, including a desire to participate in all activities with their mothers by their
side. At one point, one of the children whose mother was participating in the activities began to cry because she was asked to pose in a picture without her
mother. The girl stopped crying once the picture was taken and she could return to her mother. After breakfast, the children participated in a Halloween parade with the
