under the standard specifying that students understand that all organisms require energy and matter to live and grow. In the observed lesson, the teacher first introduced these points. Then,
using the example of a lion, the teacher wrote this on the board and circled it and asked the class what a tiger eats. The students suggested various African animals
that a lion might prey upon and it was clear that they had already studied Africa in prior lesson. The teacher added these names to the board, showing relationships and
created a food web with the word "lion" at the center. Then, the teacher divided the class into small groups and each group was allowed to choose an animal to
research. They were given the task of creating a food web for each animal. By allowing the students to choose an animal, rather than selecting one for them, the teacher
offered a degree of autonomy that seemed to make the project more meaningful to the students. The class then proceeded to the library so that each group could have
access to a computer. While some students searched the Internet for pertinent facts on their animal, others looked through the librarys more traditional reference material, such as the World Book
Encyclopedia. It was impressive to see how efficiently and effectively the students used the Internet. The class was well controlled throughout this process, with the teacher reminding the students to
use "in-door voices" only a few times. The students seemed to enjoy having the freedom to research the project in the manner that each individual preferred. Returning to the
