The following literature review focuses on three approaches to classroom management, offering an overview of recent literature, and focusing specifically on the use of punishment, positive reinforcement and whether or
not teachers should focus on misbehavior or ignore it in preschoolers. Use of punishment The traditional teacher response to misbehavior is to impose negative sanctions, which can take a
variety of forms. As indicated by a third=grade teacher asking for advice on 9-year-old boy with chronic misbehavior, negative punishment can mean taking away privileges, suspension and even expulsion (Albrecht,
2008). However, the time-away intervention model offers another alternative. This intervention consists of three steps, the first of which is time out, which consists of having the student sit in
a location that is isolated from the other students, where the student stays until he or she is calm. The second step is redirection, during which the student works while
sitting close to the teacher. The third step is conflict resolution, which encompasses the teacher and the student discussing the situation and behavioral choices (Albrecht, 2008). Use of positive
reinforcement: reward and praise Babkle (2006) stresses the importance of creating a positive classroom environment with clear rules and expectations as parameters that will help achieve the goal of good
classroom management. The key to managing misbehavior is to discern the motive behind the action, that is, determine the purpose that this serves for the child (Babkle, 2006). Determining this
factor allows the teacher to device positive alternatives to this behavior that can fulfill this purpose (Babkle, 2006). Wilhite, et al (2007) recommend the Behavioral Objective Sequence (BOS) as an
effective instrument that can aid teachers in responding to behavior problems. BOS assessments aids in functional assessment that identifies specific target behaviors and also aids in monitoring the effectiveness of
