the student will note that for the most part, the food choices are typically the same: hamburger, fries and a soft drink or milkshake. This visual provides the student
with a basis upon which to determine that modern adolescent diets reflect the significant pressures that are placed upon impressionable teens. Whether the influence is that of popular culture,
athletics or religious affiliations, teenagers are faced with difficult choices when it comes to food. In order to maintain a sense of acceptance, adolescence typically forego the necessary elements
of a proper and healthful diet in exchange for one full of simple sugars, worthless carbohydrates and empty calories just because that is what their friends are eating. When
protein is allowed into the diet, it is typically in the form of a fast food hamburger or other kind of inadequate source. This realization illustrates just how difficult
a task it is educating teenagers about the importance of proper nutrition, in that this particular age group has a tendency to follow the leader when it comes to dietary
choices. The student will inevitably note that, indeed, this is not necessarily the time in an adolescents life when smart nutritional choices are made.
