to the most technological of races, mankind has always searched for meaning and for some form of enlightenment. In many ways the study of the humanities helps us in this
pursuit. In studying such classics as "Canterbury Tales" by Chaucer and "Inferno" by Dante we can gain some insight into the spiritual journey of man, and somehow understand that no
matter the time in history, man has these pursuits in common. In the following paper we examine the journeys, and the significance of the journeys, presented in "Canterbury Tales" and
"Inferno." The paper then examines what place humanities has in the 21st century. Inferno and Canterbury Tales Dantes story is one that truly provides us with an intricate,
and yet general, view of the journey of man. The portion of the story we focus on in Inferno comes to us in the very first Canto. It is in
these first few lines that we see where the poem will perhaps go. These first few lines present us with a man who is stuck in a time in his
life where answers and enlightenment is required. It is the Canto which presents us with the innocent and frightened Dante. He is just beginning his journey, understanding that is a
necessity and that it holds danger: "MIDWAY upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost. Ah me! how
hard a thing it is to say" (Dante Canto I). We can note that while he was wise enough, and deep enough, to have even ventured on this journey,
he is also a frightened and innocent individual. He is unsure of the dangers he sees, and is confused when those dangers do not materialize, such as when he sees
