and authoritative, rather than new and experimental. Classical civilization, then, would be that which sets the criteria for other cultures to be evaluated: it is presumed to offer the best
possible model on which a society can be constructed. However, this does not mean that such civilizations must be regarded as "perfect", nor does it imply that other civilizations are
unstable or inadequate, as can be seen for the length of time over which ancient civilizations such as those of the Mesopotamians or the Egyptians flourished.
If we look at the legal, religious and philosophical aspects of these cultures, it is evident that they were by no means unlearned or barbaric. The Code of
Hammurabi, for instance, sets out a legal framework which covers all aspects of social and economic life, from property transactions to the structure of the family. The concept of generating
order from chaos, which is central to Mesopotamian cultures religious mythos, is given practical structure and function in the tenets of the law. The Code deals with the kind of
issues we would associate with civil and criminal legislation, such as murder, theft, and breach of contract, and also with the everyday life of the individual: the rights of different
classes of citizens, permitted behaviors within marriage and so on. Ancient Egyptian civilization also demonstrated a social and cultural structure which inextricably
interlinked religion, the law, and the rights and duties of individuals. The physical and supernatural worlds were considered to be essential to one another, and complex and formal ritual
was employed to ensure that the connection between Gods, man and nature was maintained. Provided these formal patterns of behavior were enacted, both the cosmos and the social order
