For many the classical theorists, such as Machiavelli, are far outdated in the world of empowering technology which enables the military to be relatively removed from battle in many cases.
But, this does not mean that the classical theorists, and the basic concepts of war, are not the same in some foundational manner. The following paper examines the words of
several authors in attempting to establish whether the classical theorists theories of war apply in the 20th and the 21st century. Classical Theorists, Modern Warfare, and the 20th/21st
Century In first examining the notion of modern warfare, the work Napoleons Last Victory and the Emergence of Modern War by Robert M. Epstein (1995) is presented as the author
addresses the notion of modern warfare. The author states how many "argue that modern war emerged only after 1871 when industrialization, technology, and the machine age fully developed" (Epstein, 1995;
4). The author argues, however, that a change in operational campaigns serve to illustrate the emergence of modern warfare. He states, "the rise of this new type of operational campaign
can be one aspect that marks the beginning of modern war" (Epstein, 1995; 5). From this one could well argue that modern warfare became a reality with the increase
in populations, the increase in the complexity of players in any given war, and the evolution of humanity overall. In all honesty while it was seen as modern warfare, the
foundations of warfare are likely the same, although the plans and endeavors, as well as the directions of the endeavors, have altered. In further examination of this Epstein illustrates more
