troubling. After all, there are people starving in one part of a nation or city, and then in another district, there may be lavish wealth. While that is something that
most capitalists would accept as par for the course, the problem is that there is a also an issue of dependency. There are relationships that exist between, for example, U.S.-based
corporations and third world nations, where the people of the latter are dependent upon companies wealth and such. Benjamin Barber in his article Jihad vs. McWorld, explores such concepts in
depth. Interestingly, while the article was written a decade ago, it is almost prophetic. Now, after September 11, 2001, people realize that indeed, the concepts of globalization and cultural diversity
are more important than ever before. In fact, it is Americas reluctance to address its importance that seems to have created a situation where the U.S. has been made vulnerable.
In any event, Barber explored these concepts about a decade ago. He explained that there are two possible political futures, one of which is a retribalization of large swaths of
humankind by war and bloodshed where culture is pitted against culture, and people against people (Barber). The second is the creation of a world that demands integration and uniformity
with fast music, fast computers, and fast food (Barber). Of course, while one would think that the latter is more desirable, the reality is far from the case.
Later, in the article, the author says: "For democracy to persist in our brave new McWorld, we will have to commit acts of conscious political will -- a possibility, but
