more information on using this paper properly! At the time during which Dante Alighieri penned "The Divine Comedy", Europe was in the midst of a transitional period. The Christian
church was already well established, but many of the most grievous institutional abuses of church offices were just beginning to manifest. Accordingly, this led to a backlash of Classicist values
in society that would eventually manifest in the Renaissance. In the fledgling stages of the Classical revival, however, there were many works which admirably fused the aesthetics and values of
both Classical and Christian cultures. Foremost among these is, of course, "The Divine Comedy". This paper will explore the influences of Classical aesthetics on Dantes work. This paragraph helps the
student present a basic summary of Dantes work. "The Divine Comedy" is actually a literary triptych, but it remains most well known for the first of the three segments, "The
Inferno". "The Inferno" is long-form poem, divided into Cantos, in which Dante himself is accompanied by the poet Virgil into the bowels of the Christian underworld. After their arrival, the
text forms an exhaustive catalogue of the cosmological structure of Hell, as well as detailed descriptions of the agonies that will be visited upon the various denizens of the pit.
These denizens themselves are noteworthy because Dante, in an amusing subversion of traditional artist / patron relations, includes many of his societal enemies, including a number of individuals occupying high
