is in fact a democracy, but not a direct democracy, which leaves room for a great deal of political play. In fact, politics play a great role and while contemporary
political theorists can provide much information on the topic, original theorists from earlier centuries sometimes contribute much to the political plate. When combing through the vast amount of literature,
a few authors stand out. Certain great works come to mind. Platos Republic and Machiavellis The Prince are two works in this realm as are the latter theorists work
referred to as The Discourses. Finally, Hobbes is another fixture in philosophy and much about politics may be gleaned from his infamous Leviathan. In reviewing the literature, one may assess
just how George W. Bush fares and an evaluation in fact of many current and past leaders can be made with the use of this older material. Many modern
thinkers do disagree with what has come before. Leo Strauss for example contends that Hobbes broke with tradition by viewing the idea of natural rights as "fundamental and deriving from
it a doctrine of natural laws" (Tierney, 2002, p.389). However, much of what was written is in fact embraced by todays politicians as well as the people. When one
views the former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, for example, one hardly thinks about the political expert Niccolo Machiavellis works. But, according to some, Bill Clinton is quite
the opposite of the authors ideal leader (Barone, 1995). He is the antithesis of everything this early political thinker wrote about. Hence, this is a work that bears contemplation. How
might a current leader fare under the scrutiny of great political theorists? The answer is sometimes illusive and Bill Clinton is perhaps an exception. There have been many other presidents
