least of which are images that offer us an understanding of class struggles in the individual cultures. The following paper examines these two novels, separately, discussing their elements concerning class
and class struggle. The God of Small Things In Arundhati Roys novel we have the story of fraternal twins. While much of the story merely involves their individual
struggles, aside from class, there is one particular element to the story that speaks of the differences in class, aimed at the structure of the caste system of India.
With the characters of Ammu and Velutha the laws of this class structure are broken, creating a great deal of symbolic struggle within the novel. Ammus family owns a
pickle factory. Velutha is employed by this company. As such he is well beneath her. In addition, he is an untouchable, the lowest individual, even below the prescribed classes. Even
the other workers in the factory look down on him because he is an untouchable. One of the most powerful elements that speak of Veluthas position and how others
see him, comes from how many people think he feels he is better than others. The men in the factory thinks he is somewhat pretentious and even his father feels
that the boy is taking himself too seriously and not accepting his place in the society. His father notes: "Perhaps it was just a lack of hesitation. An unwarranted assurance.
