is about race, but when looking at the text it is an accounting of class from the perspective of a child from an Irish Jewish family. It the time the
book is written class is associated with race, as Conley learns when he finds out that when he finds out that he is the only boy in his class that
is not subjected to corporal punishment, as it would be unheard of for a black teacher to strike a white pupil. This may be race, but it is also clearly
placing different social standards/values on the different members of society. Conley develops the perception of a complex social structure with different elements of class. When he moves school to
P.S 41 it is noted as being in Greenwich Village, a school he got into by using the address of a friend of the family, was one which was more
upscale that the last school, but it is still only a couple of miles from a murder, but it is also observed that it is not as up market as
other areas, examples given include the fact that the doormen where not as ubiquitous as doormen in other areas. This middle class area is presented as one that
was rich compared to the norms of most of the US, even if it was only middle class in New York, giving the idea that class is a matter of
perception and context as well as wealth and privilege. Indeed, when compared to the area that Conley lived in there were differences in the conditions of the buildings and issues
