on the concept of social equality. Even here, however, there are distinct classes. We divide these classes primarily on the basis of economics. We categorize them as
"upper", "middle", and "lower" classes in accordance with factors such as income and other resources. As might be expected, class determines many aspects of the American experience. IT
is not always understood, however, that those that find themselves in the lower echelons of society are not always the derelicts of society. Although the upper class may perceive
them that way, in many respects it is the lower classes that keeps America fueled in terms of labor and even in terms of our national safety.
The upper echelon of our society is in most cases the controlling factor in terms of policies and even law. While all classes are affected
by these policies and laws it seems that the middle class and, in particular, the lower class is the most adversely affected. To illustrate this contention we can look
at several different realms of life in America. Even the most basic aspects of our existence such as the types of housing that
accommodates us is affected by class. Housing, in fact, is one of the most obvious areas where more affluent individuals have many advantages over less fortunate individuals with lower
incomes. Obviously, there is an indisputable inequality gap between the very rich of this country and the very poor. There is also a gap, however, between the middle
and lower class American. That gap is most obvious in regard to the types of housing that these people occupy. Housing policy can, of course, lessen that gap
