become president, but the truth is that only middle aged or older white males have achieved this status. Aside from the Kennedy exception, all presidents have been Protestant. The president
of the United States essentially represents the founders and the majority. Can anyone grow up to be president? It does not seem that there is any truth in that statement.
It is likely that little black girls or teenage Latino boys may think about a political career and someday wonder whether or not they can hold a high office. Yet,
it does not seem to be likely that someone other than a white male will occupy the oval office any time soon. Why is this relevant? Most of the
men holding the position--with an exception of one two--is from an elite, wealthy family. Most presidents have attended Ivy League schools. The inarticulate George Bush did. But then there is
the articulate, intelligent Alan Keyes who did not stand a chance. Everyone knew. In America, there is a color line, but what is not so obvious is that there is
an even bigger class line. Class in society, and in the world of work is very significant. People cannot get ahead. In businesses, new hires often come in the form
of illegal immigrants who will work for a small amount of cash. In the realm of the executive, there is the illusion of success. An executive making perhaps sixty
or eighty or one hundred thousand dollars per year may be married to another who earns the same amount. They can afford to buy that Mercedes. The payments for a
lease are not all that expensive. They can afford to own a nice home and take vacations. They are not independently wealthy as they are tied to their paychecks, but
