thoughts and feelings which come through quite dramatically. The work, while not intended to be objective anyway, includes enough facts and figures as to be an important contribution to the
knowledge base on the prohibition era. The title of the book is rather curious. In some ways it can be taken in a sarcastic sense, suggesting that society is overstepping
its bounds and that no one should be accountable to government. But the subtitle "An Interpretation of American Prohibition" is rather telling. Clearly, Clarks opinion is the basis for the
work, though he draws on evidence which is rather powerful. Clark wrote about the unrelenting violence which accompanied this movements and drew on ideas from authors such as Burnham
and Gusfield. Yet, Clarks unique take on the matter is rather astounding. When thinking about prohibition one cannot help but form an opinion one way or the other. People who
are alcoholics today might applaud the courageous step the government took and feel that they backed down when prohibition ended. On the other front are those who feel that what
one does with their own bodies is no one elses business. Those battles are fought today, but not over alcohol. That is what makes the subject matter unique. It seems
that there is concern over illegal drugs and tobacco today, but few will tug at the alcohol manufacturers pockets. At the time, alcohol was seen as the culprit for much
despair and that point is clearly seen in Clarks work. While thoughts about personal freedom and rights emanate from todays society, and at the time, things were vastly different. Thus,
