She began to write him a letter relating all the events in her mind that would keep him alive for her. This chronicle turned into the manuscript of The House
of the Spirits, the novel which launched her career and was published in Spain a year later" (BBC-Books). However, interestingly enough, much of her life had been scared by the
disappearance of her father early in life. She states that "Until very-recently, I didnt trust men...I thought they werent reliable; if you wanted something done, you had to do it
yourself - including raising the kids....I never surrendered to a relationship with a man the way I did to my children, and my mother" (Jaggi). This offers us a very
intriguing, and strong, foundation from which we can examine the character of Clara in "The House of the Spirits." Clara In many ways Clara, though a woman, is
the ultimate power in the family presented in the novel. This is because she is the matriarch and is looked upon with respect and admiration. One critic notes that "Clara
has a tremendous influence over Estebans decisions through her mysterious and mystical ways. Clara the clairvoyant could interpret dreams" (EssayBank.Co.Uk). In this we see the subtle power possessed by the
relatively quiet, yet ominous woman. We note that she is clearly a very "mysterious person, which attracts Esteban to her and what little he knows and understands about her,
and at the same time tells him to keep his distance until she allows him to approach her, like the time she left Tres Marias two days after he hit
