Haggard and Freud each have their own ideas about "civilization" and the "primitive," and they are not alone. People
in society today have trouble with the rapid pace and many long to return to a slower, easier time and place. They are not certain that they enjoy setting alarms,
checking e-mail, or lugging cell phones and beepers with them wherever they go. Some find the constant ringing of the telephone disheartening and the fact that they must be in
a variety of routines, limiting. Was man really meant to live this way? While the questions arise in the twenty-first century, authors like
Sigmund Freud recognized that civilization even in his time was rough on the human psyche. And who is better to know the psychological ramifications of modernity than Freud? Freud published
a work called "Civilization and Its Discontents," which explored such ideas. In this non-fiction book, the author looks at the limitations that society imposes, particularly when it comes to creativity,
and mans struggle for individuality. This is also a theme that many science fiction authors address. Does the future hold a world where people are all the same? The reason
why science fiction writers choose this is likely because there is much fodder in respect to this idea; the world indeed seems to be headed in such a direction.
