collectively changed the face of warfare. This new weaponry included torpedoes, land mines, ironclad ships, machine guns and the conical bullet, just to name a few.ii As this suggests, the
Industrial Revolution promoted the rapid development of technology, which affected the field of weaponry, as it did all other phrases of life.iii The changes of the twentieth century, which saw
a shift from tube artillery to guided missiles and nuclear weapons, is no more startling than those that faced the field artillery specialist between 1841 and 1865.iv Newly developed rapid-firing
and long-range small arms changed the average soldiers method of fighting. New rifled cannon greatly increased the range of weaponry and gave leaders the power to destroy masonry fortifications.v In
response to each of these innovations, new techniques and military tactics had to be devised. The following examination of weaponry innovation examines how these technological innovations changed strategy on the
battlefield, ushering in the modern era of warfare. The presence of new weapons on the battlefield greatly affected how battles were fought, effectively causing classical tactics and battlefield formations
to become obsolete.vi Nevertheless, for a great deal of the war, commanders continued to employ tactics that had been used for a century or more.vii They amassed their men into
tightly closed lines and moved toward the enemy. This sort of strategy was effective when soldiers were all armed with muskets, which had a limited range of fire.viii As the
