fact, the significance of this process was that capturing just one picture required the collective efforts of two people, one to mix and pour chemicals onto a glass plate and
the other to pose and focus the shot. After the time-consuming task of waiting for the chemicals to dissolve from the glass, the plate was then placed in a
bath solution to be sensitized, a process that occurred in the dark to protect the vulnerable components. The glass was put into a holder which was then placed into
the camera; with but a few precious minutes to capture and develop the shot before the chemical composition was spoiled, the two photographers hurriedly transferred the exposed plate to the
darkroom wagon. Considering the fragile nature of these glass plates when being used against the backdrop of battle, it is easy to see how much more challenging the process
was when trying to avert damage to the photo (Library of Congress, 2000). Taking liberties with the camera lens is something Alexander Gardner knows a great deal about, inasmuch as
the Civil War photographer quite readily enhanced both literary and visual composition for what he perceived as giving the public what they wanted. If a specific shot did not
exist, he would create it; if the story was not that intriguing, he would fabricate it. In short, Gardner did not allow the shortcomings of Civil War era photography
stand in the way of his ability to provide the public with a more abrasive view of the battleground (Library of Congress, 2000). Photographers often want to communicate a
