that spurred the American Civil War. Indeed, this war erupted primarily over the issue of federal authority. Interestingly, the 1857 Dred Scott decision mandated that blacks were not citizens of the United States. The Federal government, however, was intent on exerting more and more control over the Southern states. Slavery was one of realms where that control was focused. That focus, however, had in fact been preceded by decades of compromises in regard to federal control. Even casual research reveals that numerous events could be considered causative factors in the Civil War. Five of the more important of these are: the annexation of Texas, the Wilmot proviso, expansionism, the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, and the Presidential election of 1860. While obviously there are many more, the space constraints of this paper allows a discussion of only these few. In the so-called Missouri compromise. Missouri asked for admission to the Union in 1817. Because she was a slave state this caused considerable disagreement between those who opposed slavery and those who upheld it because her addition threatened to tip the then even balance of slave states and free states. A compromise was worked out regarding the admission of Missouri to the Union. The Missouri compromise allowed Missouri in as a slave state while at the same time allowing another state, Maine, in as a free state. This compromise also specified that no new slave states would be permitted north of the 36 degrees 30 minute parallel and no free states south of that location. This compromise provided a workable short-term solution but would not prove to be a long-term solution to the growing discontent over the issue ...
