The reasons surrounding the United States Civil War were many and varied. So too were the reasons which the North won this great war and the South lost. Most
of these reasons centered around three factors: 1. The differences in the
industrial strength of the South verses the North. 2. The larger population base of the Northern States as compared to that of
the Southern states. 3. The timing of the various events which unfolded during the war.
Although other factors enter into the picture as well such as the politics surrounding the war and the power of
the various leaders and prominent citizens, and of course the military strategy utilized by each side; for the purposes of this paper it will be these first three which will
be concentrated on. The numerous factors which led to differences in the industrial strength of the Southern States and the Northern States, and
the population base of each, began to develop from the point of discovery of this land which is so often referred to as the "New World". These many reasons
became even more pronounced during the colonial period of the country and once the new country gained its independence from England. In reality, the South developed into an agrarian
